The Epp Is Independent of Case: on Illicit Unaccusative Incorporation∗

چکیده
The stipulative nature of the (generalized) EPP – the requirement that certain functional heads have filled specifiers – has led to numerous attempts to subsume its effects within other properties of natural language (e.g. Fukui & Speas 1986; Bošković 1997, 2002, 2007; Martin 1999; Grohmann et al. 2000; Epstein & Seely 2006; Landau 2007; Bjorkman & Zeijlstra 2014; Richards 2014; McFadden & Sundaresan 2015). Most commonly, the (generalized) EPP has been subsumed within Case Theory (e.g. Fukui & Speas 1986; Bošković 1997, 2002, 2007; Martin 1999; Grohmann et al. 2000; Epstein & Seely 2006). The (generalized) EPP and the Case Filter – the requirement that DPs receive abastract Case – share a significant amount of explanatory coverage. Both are able to account for A-movement in passives, unaccusatives, and raising (1-3):

The unaccusative hypothesis and noun classification*
The unaccusative hypothesis of Perlmutter (1978) andBurzio (1981,1986) claims that intransitive verbs are not homogeneous; rather, they are divided into two classes: unergative and unaccusative. This paper argues that the unaccusative hypothesis can be extended to the category of noun. Evidence supporting this claim comes from the resultative construction and accusative-case assignment in Japan...
متن کاملAcquisition of English Unergative and Unaccusative Structures by Persian EFL Learners
The acquisition of argument structures has been studied by a variety of second language acquisition scholars within the past two decades (Atay, 2010; Can, 2009; Chay, 2006, & Kras, 2007, among others). In the present study, ‘Predicate’ as the most substantial element of a sentence is investigated. There are three English verb-types which seem to be more problematic for Persian EFL learners: (a)...

“Obliqueness” as a Component of Argument Structure in Amharic Mark Baker Rutgers University Abstract: The purpose of this article is to show that some arguments in Amharic count as oblique as opposed to direct. Oblique arguments include the nonagentive subjects of psych verbs but not those of unaccusative verbs, the goal arguments but not the source arguments of ditransitive verbs, and extra “a...
متن کاملInfluences of temporal evolution of ground motion frequency content on developed dynamic ratcheting in SDOF systems
Dynamic Ratcheting (DR) is a nonlinear dynamic phenomenon occurring in hysteretic damping systems. It means the structural plastic deformation increases asymmetrically in successive cycles under an earthquake excitation. Although it is generally recognized that DR is closely related to the frequency contents of an earthquake excitation applied to thestructure, no targeted analysis has bee...
